When it comes to bulbs and appliances, you can get the same results for less money by choosing energy-efficient options. If you own an older refrigerator, for example, you might be spending $150 a year or more to power it.
STAY INFORMED
LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs with the same level of light.
Change your light bulbs
Light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) use significantly less electricity, last 15 times longer than traditional bulbs and provide the same amount of light. Change your bulbs, save money. It’s really that easy.
Any LED bulb is an improvement over an incandescent bulb, but Energy Star® certified bulbs have been tested to ensure they deliver what they say they will. Check out this lightbulb buying guide. Do not forget! When you trade out or replace your dead lightbulbs, bring them to the Westport Transfer Station where they are collected separately to be recycled.
Purchase efficient appliances
When choosing new appliances, the real cost goes beyond the sticker price. The operating costs over the life of the appliance matter. Look for appliances with the Energy Star® label. These have been certified to ensure they use less energy than traditional appliances and therefore have a lower operating cost.
In Connecticut, instant discounts on Energy Star® lighting and appliances can be found at local retailers. Look for the Energize CT label.
TIP
Energy conservation can be as simple as turning off lights or appliances when you don’t need them.
