If you are looking for ways to be more sustainable in the New Year, start by making sure you are recycling correctly! ♻️✅

Don’t miss this #TrashTalkThursday where Gately & Jo break down the most common recycling mistakes that could be sending all your lovely separated recyclables right to the trash.

1️⃣ Do not bag your recycling in plastic bags. It will be refused at the recycling center and THROWN IN THE TRASH. If you have to bag your recycling, use a paper bag instead.

🌟 DON’T BE GREENWASHED: Even if the plastic bag uses the recycling symbol or advertises itself to be recyclable, they absolutely are NOT accepted in our single stream.

3️⃣ Plastic wrap or film (think the material they wrap bundles of paper towels in) CANNOT BE RECYCLED in your blue bin. Recycle this type of material the same place you recycle your plastic bags on the way in to Stop & Shop, Big Y, or Stew Leonards.

4️⃣ 2x2” RULE OF RECYCLING: If it is smaller than 2x2” or about the palm of your hand, it can’t be recycled in your blue bin, no matter what the material is made of.

🌟 EXCEPTION: You can recycle the caps or lids to bottles, jugs, etc. when they are attached the original container. They cannot be recycled on their own.

Happy Holidays! It’s part two of our Holiday #TrashTalkThursday series. Gately & Jo share some additional tips to help keep the steam clean and avoid wish-cycling:

⭐️ Gift Cards: Even though they are plastic, they are too small to recycle in your single stream. They should go in the trash.

⭐️ Holiday Cards: Most can be recycled but if they have glitter or foil, they should go in the trash.

⭐️ String Lights: Cannot be recycled in your blue bin. They should go in the trash or recycled in the electronics section of the Transfer Station.

⭐️ Batteries: Should NEVER go in your trash or blue bin. Collect them and recycle at the Transfer Station.

⭐️ Tissue Paper: Try to reuse otherwise it goes in the trash.

As our amount of waste increases over the last few weeks of the year, try to do your part to ensure you’re separating and disposing of materials properly. When in doubt, throw it out!

🎁 WRAPPING PAPER: Most cannot be recycled, even if it says so on the label! The ONLY kind that can be recycled is KRAFT wrapping paper.

🛍 GIFT BAGS: Paper gift bags are trash, but always reuse them when possible. Tissue paper is also trash.

🎀 BOWS: Are trash. Again - always try to reuse!

In 2024, we built upon existing programs and we launched new ones, including 🍽️#skipthestuff in partnership with the @westportctgov and our current LEGO Donation Drive 📦 (details on our website!).

What do we have planned for 2025? 🌟 We hope to coordinate a youth sports equipment exchange and relaunch the Zero Food Waste Challenge to encourage more Westporters to divert food waste out of their “trash” and into compost. We are also working on a multi-organization collaboration on managing climate change in our backyards.

Sustainable Westport hosts events throughout the year designed to inform and engage local residents, businesses, and town employees on a variety of sustainable topics. This year, over 4️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ people attended our events and the recordings from our events have been viewed over a thousand times 🙌🎉

In 2024, 36% of the dollars we raised went towards events and programming. To continue to provide our community with free events and programming, we need your support. 💚We have big plans to expand our 🏠🛠Residential Energy Learning series in 2025 to bring you practical knowledge on how to reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills. ➡️
