What is the Zero Food Waste Challenge?
It is a town-wide campaign to reduce Westport’s residential food waste by at least 25%.
Why is diverting food waste so important?
Nearly 1 in 4 bags of groceries purchased gets thrown out, and food scraps are heavy, expensive to transport and don’t burn well in the waste to energy incinerator where all of Westport’s solid waste goes.
Also, food scraps are valuable! When converted into compost they capture valuable nutrients and water, and return them to the ground, sequestering carbon, improving soil quality and cleaning water.
How do you get started? Here’s how:
- Reduce the amount of food waste you create.
- Help redistribute food to those who need it.
- Compost food scraps either by bringing your food scraps to the Transfer Station or signing up with one of the commercial food scrap haulers servicing Westport
- Check back regularly to see what a difference Westport is making!
How are we doing?
Since we started our challenge, our food scrap efforts have slowly increased but we are still short of our goal of 48 tons per month.
