Reusable Coffee Cup Program
We are so inspired by the response of the Westport community to the Refill Not Landfill program. Residents have taken a simple but effective step towards reducing waste and combating climate change by bringing their own reusable cups and mugs to local cafés. Most importantly, we have collectively started changing our habits and daily behaviors to create a more sustainable world for ourselves and future generations.
Disposable cups contribute to significant waste in Westport and across the United States. Most “to-go” paper cups, used for hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, are coated with plastic to prevent leaks, which means they cannot be recycled. Plastic cups used for iced coffee, tea, and other drinks, often end up in the trash; the majority are NOT recycled.
Although the program has ended, we encourage you to continue bringing reusable cups and mugs to local cafés. The collective effort of individuals can make a significant difference in reducing waste and protecting our planet. We look forward to continuing working together to build a more sustainable future.
Lastly, we would like to thank the local businesses that either participated in this program or donated to this program or both! Refill Not Landfill would not have happened without your support, enthusiasm, and commitment.

How did the Refill Not Landfill Program work?
Refill not Landfill was a six-month program that encouraged residents to utilize reusable cups/mugs at participating cafés to help reduce waste, fight climate change, and support small businesses. Ultimately, we aimed to utilize a monthly raffle to encourage residents to develop more sustainable habits when grabbing coffee “on the go.” Here’s how it worked:
- Bring a clean, reusable cup or mug to one of our participating locations. NOTE, participating cafes will not wash cups or mugs.
- Order your favorite drink (coffee, latte, tea, matcha, etc.). Please note that not all drinks can be filled with mugs or cups brought from home (think things like smoothies).
- At checkout, scan a QR code and submit your name and email address for each drink you purchase using a reusable cup to receive credit for your visit.
- To be eligible for the monthly raffle, you must participate at least five times within a month at any of the participating locations.
- Each month, Sustainable Westport reviews submissions and draws one winner to receive a prize from a local business.
