Why do we compost? 🌎

It’s estimated that 22% of our solid waste is FOOD 🤯 When food ends up in the trash, it releases harmful methane gas as it decomposes. But when you compost food scraps, you're giving them new life - turning them into nutrient-rich soil. Composting is a simple yet powerful way for Westport residents to reduce waste and combat climate change.

Sustainable Westport is partnering with compost expert, author and Westport Resident Scott Smith and Executive Director of @parkcitycompostinitiative Tim O'Connor to bring you “Composting for Sustainability” at the @westportlibrary (swipe for details!).

We'll dive into the "how" and "why" of composting - from reducing waste and enriching your garden soil, to combating climate change and building community. 💚

LEGO bricks cannot be recycled ❌ ♻️They are made from a complex (and durable) plastic composition, and their small size (smaller than 2”x2”) means they cannot be sorted at a standard recycling center ➡️

Instead of throwing your old LEGO away (or allowing them to collect dust in your closet), donate them to be distributed to children in need! Sustainable Westport is partnering with LEGO's Replay program to give those bins of pre-loved bricks a new life. Donate your LEGO, DUPLO, Technic, minifigure, and/or baseplate pieces, and your old bricks and pieces will find their way into the hands of kids who need them most 🙌🎉

Help us keep those iconic plastic toys out of landfills and in the hands of future builders, inventors, and problem-solvers 🌟 Swipe for drop-off times & locations!

Still have “naked” pumpkins or gourds to dispose of? You can compost at home or drop them off at the Westport Transfer Station for FREE during regular business hours!

Four years ago, Uber set the goal to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040 👏 🚙 🚗 Uber drivers are adopting EVs five times faster than the average motorist in the US, Canada, and Europe, with over 182,000 EV/Hybrid vehicles on the road.

Uber Green, Uber’s electric/hybrid ride offering, is now available in 200+ cities globally. In 40+ cities, Uber Green is available exclusively with EVs for about the same price as UberX 💚 In addition, the Uber App now includes an EV preference to ensure eco-conscious riders are matched with the nearest EV and other features to track and improve driver and rider emissions.

Got bins of no longer being used LEGO bricks collecting dust? Donate them during our first-ever LEGO Replay Drive and give your bricks a new life! ♻️💚

We’ve partnered with organizations across Westport to collect pre-loved LEGO, DUPLO, Technic, minifigure, and/or baseplate pieces. Donated pieces will be packaged and sent to LEGO Replay to be distributed to kids who need them most. Full or partial sets and random pieces are welcome!

Did you know over 1 𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍 pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills every year? Help mitigate Westport’s contribution to unnecessary holiday food waste by composting your pumpkins!

You can compost your pumpkins (or gourds) at home, the Westport Transfer Station, or the @westportfarmersmarket Great Pumpkin Toss 🎃💚 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞: “𝐍𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐝” 𝐩𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲. If you painted or decorated your pumpkin with glue or glitter, they should go in the trash.

Last year, @actionwastesolutions was able to divert over 3,000 lbs of pumpkins 🙌Help spread the word so we can increase that number this year.
